Vacation Recap- Part 1

The weekend is over, we're home again and getting back in the swing of things. The trip started up Garrettsville, Ohio (where?) near Aurora (where?) and Ravenna (where?). These are small towns east of Cleveland (oh...Cleveland. Thanks!).

My uncle lives in Garrettsville (remember, near Aurora and Ravenna?) and his daughter just turned one. I should probably mention my aunt here, too, since she's the mother and really did most of the work. It's just that I'm related to my uncle by blood and her by marriage, so I mentioned him first. But I don’t want anyone to feel left out.

The party was a lot of fun, mainly eating and drinking and playing cornhole while the kids played football and soccer. And a bonfire. I got to see my great grandmother and great grandpa, other aunt, uncles, and cousins I only see about once a year at events such as this one. As an added bonus, my Dad was in town and made a surprise visit. We knew about it beforehand but had to have a non-disclosure agreement in place so nobody would know he was coming. I think that was in case he had to back out.

We were going to camp out. By which I mean sleep in a tent in my uncle's backyard while otherwise enjoying all of the amenities of a comfortable home. Due to one brief mid-afternoon rain shower and more than one beer, the tent never got set up. So we slept on air-mattresses in the basement (it was a finished basement, very nice).

We spent the morning trying to get Wii Fit before loading up and heading home. I am not Wii Fit, at least not when it comes to ski jumping. I'm better with Yoga. Apparently my seven year old son has the Wii body of a twenty-six year old. I don't know what to make of that.

We have a GPS named Lila, and she usually tells us where we need to go, in her sweet British accent. Lila smoked some really strong crack before we headed home, though, and instead of guiding us back the way we came, the bitch took us on a convaluted tour through the greater Akron-Canton area before leading us to the road home (I-71 south, in this case).

The rest of Sunday was rest and relaxation, and a little bit of getting ready for Monday and our trip to King’s Island…

Thanks Elana. There's more to come, tomorrow I'll post about King's Island, there's some good material from that adventure, too.

The football game involving much running and little kicking gets called football but the one involving much kicking and no carrying of the ball gets named after the socks - what is that about?
It's almost enough to make me want to hack into your GPS system - oops!!

I'm glad you'all had a blast!
Sounds much like Eastering with the Australian contingent in the Yorkshire Dales - well the alcohol, eating and games part did.

Elaine,

Arguing semantics of football with a soccer with a country that has yet to adopt the metric system is an exercise in futility. We don't make sense, and we embrace that fact. It's who we are, as an American People ;-)

We do metric... currency, measurement (of anything you can put on a table) - all base 10.
Except miles kids use km but are 'beginner bilingual' when it come to understanding distances that way.
We are like-European these days.

This post made me laugh! My family has such a poor history of tent pitching that we now get a campsite AND a cabin wherever we go...that way, we've got SOMEWHERE to sleep.

Hi, Rick!

I had family adventures of my own this past week, so naturally, I'm behind in my posting...

Nevertheless, I had to catch up with the Daley Rant - and get a good laugh, as always - and lo and behold, I discovered that we have something else in common. The hubby gave me Wii Fit for Christmas, and I, too, am best at the Yoga exercises. In fact, the Balance games are my bane - especially anything involving balls. Read that how you will!

Laura,

My biggest challenge is tree pose. I do falling tree great, though.

I prefer to do yoga on a mat, we have a Brian Kest DVD that has some good routines.

Yoga is cool. You can break a sweat from an exercise that primarily consists of standing still. It takes a lot of energy to keep from falling over.

I am so with you, Rick. The tree pose isn't my best either - I don't fall over, but I don't stand perfectly still either. I don't think I've ever NOT heard my "trainer" say, "You're a little shaky..."

But I, too, prefer my yoga mat to the Wii Fit board - I have a range of DVDs to keep it interesting. I have yet to try a class, though... I'm a shy exerciser by nature. :-)

I actually know where Aurora is. My great-aunt and great-uncle used to live there and I visited them there several years ago.

And I'm glad my grandmother is afraid of modern technology. She won't even get cable.

Life is sweet- Thanks for stopping by (here and Aurora). Technology in the hands of the elderly is frightening. Once, long ago, I did some tech support work in a call center, and grandparents were always the hardest to work with. Not only were they clueless in regard to technology, they were lonely and wanted to keep talking all day (when you have a supervisor breathing down your neck to end the call).
