A-Z Challenge: The Princess Bride

The first time I saw this I was in high school with a group of friends.  I didn't want to watch it.  The title screamed "chick flick" in the worst possible way.  I was just like the kid in the movie.  And, just like the kid in the movie, I got hooked early on and loved the story by the end.

If you haven't seen The Princess Bride, it's worth your time to check it out.  It has adventure, sword-fighting (left-handed and right-handed, by the way), giants, intense logical arguments, deception, torture, magic, and the very best revenge scene ever filmed.

I'm totally serious about that revenge scene.  It makes the movie, and it give me goosebumps every time I watch it.  I would hope that if I am ever killed by a six-fingered man over a magnificent sword, that my kids would avenge my death in a similar manner.

Every post has made me want to see the movie I've written about.  Several of them happened to be on TV within a few days of posting, which either means that TV programming is reading my mind and catering to my whims, or I like popular movies.  I'm going with the former.  But for this movie, and this revenge scene, I could not resist going to YouTube to watch it again.  Here you go, in case you have the same irrepressible urge...

Click the link.  I tried to embed it but blogger won't take the link and the blogger YouTube search won't pull this video and I'm frustrated and have stopped trying.  Dammit.

Woohooo! This movie is a classic must-see for everyone. Every time I catch it on as I'm flipping through channels, I have to stop and watch at least a little bit. May this post inspire everyone to run out and watch it :)

I saw it in high school, too! Went with my mom, who totally didn't get it. It was not what I expected either, as I was looking forward to a chick flick. You know, since I'm a chick and all.

By the time Buttercup launches herself down the hill after Wesley, punctuating her fall with very ungraceful and undignified grunts and oomphs, I was laughing so hard I had tears running down my cheeks.

I loved it so much that I dragged my friends back to the theater to see it. I think I went three or four times. When it came out on video, I hooked up two VCRs to make my own bootleg copy. This was before you could really buy videos and if you "lost" one from the video store, they would charge you something like $80.

It competes with YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN for best movie ever. Oops, I hope that isn't a spoiler for your Y entry.

I love this film. Hubby introduced me to it. Unfortunately we only have it on video - we've never updated it to DVD which means.... *gasp* my kids have never seen it!!!

This needs rectifying - thanks for this reminder!

Eric- I may have to pop this in and watch it with my family this weekend.

AFE- Inconceivable!

Laurel- Incredible sense of foreshadowing...

Annalisa- It is your solemn duty as a parent to watch this with your kids!

I love to watch a good sword fight! (but not the broadswords - they're more hack and cut) And the hero has persistence, too. Great link, Rick, I'm sure I have watched this before.

Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone are my classic all time fave sword fighters.

This movie is classic! I was in my twenties when it came out and was hooked immediately. It's just so refreshing. Anytime I'm scanning channels and I see it, I stop. Sometimes for the rest of the movie!
Read the book a few years ago and really enjoyed it as well.

I saw this when it first came out and now own it on VHS and DVD. I wanted my daughter to watch it with me, so she can see how fab it is, but when she saw Wesley "die" she cried so hard she refused to watch it again.

I just love Inigo Montoya.
